Funerary Urn?
Bronze Age
Orkney

Description

A possible funerary urn visible within very dark grey/black deposits over old ground surface developed over till. The straight-sided, flat-bottomed coarse-ware pot pot has dimensions of approx. 30cm x 30cm. The seaward exposed side of the pot has broken away revealing a very dark grey/black fill. The remainder is intact. No burnt bone is visible, but only the outer edge of the fill is exposed. The site is located at the coast edge at the south end of the modern graveyard extension to Skail church. Although the coastal strip here has a modern bank and is tussocky and uneven, there is a visible mound, approx. 2m x 2m over the location of the pot. The dark grey/black deposits and old ground surface developed on till are visible for at least 50m along the coast edge south of the new gabion basket coastal defence of the current Skail churchyard. The dark deposit is approx. 40-50cm thick and contains frequent cracked stone. Some of which may be fire-cracked, but natural oxidation would also cause reddening and blackening of the sandstone. Rapid inspection in poor weather conditions identified no other cultural deposits.
