Circular stone and mortar structure consisting of an outer circular wall of pink sandstone, c. 5m in diameter which encircles an inner circular sandstone and mortar wall measuring c. 2m in diameter. The south edge of the structure has been truncated by brick and concrete structure Site 1081, but there is nothing to suggest they are related.
The structure looks like a well, but old photographs show a chimney in this area associated with the Dubbie Braes flax mill - so it could be the remains of the chimney or another structure associated with the mill.
The structure is emerging out of the base of the Francis Pit bing.

The structure looks like a well, but old photographs show a chimney in this area associated with the Dubbie Braes flax mill - so it could be the remains of the chimney or another structure associated with the mill. There is an old coal pit here marked on the 1st edition 6 inch OS, so it could be a ventilation shaft associated with this.
The structure is emerging out of the base of the Francis Pit bing.
Historical research to narrow down date and evidence of structures in this area that predate the Frances Pit. Assign priority 3.
