Description

Red Castle with midden below. The castle is in a ruinous state and sits on a low hill at the coast edge. An eroding bank runs for a distance of approximately 50m below it,and includes approximately 5m of midden visible with burnt peat and bone. Castle debris in the form of masonry blocks and roof slates were observed on the foreshore. Castle structure unstable; fragments of structure found fallen on beach. Do not approach. ShoreUPDATE Oct 2014: Significant erosion of the base of the midden has occurred in 2014. Vegetation that protected the midden has been stripped away. Animal bone, pottery, an Fe cannon ball and a copper alloy object were recovered from the midden and deposited at Montrose Museum. Rip rap coastal defence has been installed downstream of the midden ShoreUPDATE 11/12/2015 As described. Midden visible in coast edge containing quantities of peat ash. Comments Red Castle is on private land and is a dangerous structure. It is not safe to go near it.
