Description

Brick structure under edge of coal bing. Military? 31/08/2013 A semi-circular precast concrete structure, faced with bricks at the base of the Frances Pit coal bing. The structure measures c. 25m x 10m. Historic maps and AP's do not show the feature. It looks like it may have had a military origin, possibly a gun battery? Presumably it was buried by bing material and is now emerging. 19/10/19 site shows evidence of substantial deterioration on the seaward side. Seaward arc of brick-faced wall has collapsed, and concrete platform capping structure is fragmented and has mostly collapsed, exposing more of brick structure beneath and vertical metal beams underpinning it. These brick structures are also collapsing.
