Scotland's Coastal Heritage at Risk

Solway Coastwise coastal survey

Read the Solway Coastwise survey report

In April 2019, we joined the Solway Firth Partnership and volunteers from their Solway Coastwise project to explore three stretches of the Solway Firth coastline.

We visited three very different areas: the dynamic, ever-changing tidal riverbank at Redkirk Point at Gretna, the extractive landscape at Auchencairn near Dalbeattie and the WW2 Mulberry Harbour prototype testing site at Cairnhead Bay near Garlieston in Wigtownshire.

A mixture of rapid archaeological survey techniques and historical research added 28 new archaeological sites to the SCHARP database, and updated and enhanced 5 more. Participants learned about the areas we visited and were also given training and practice in a range of archaeological recording methods. By talking to local people and researchers, we were also able to integrate local knowledge, history and specialist information to the records which helps to support our understanding of the importance of these historic landscapes and some of the rare and important sites here.
